Any feelings of grind have not made their presence known, as you can level up your individual characters very easily. I still havenвЂ™t fully invested in the online competitive environment and seen howВ the stat system effectsВ it, and I donвЂ™t see that changing for me anytime soon. Blessed be, earning вЂњMother BoxesвЂќ and other gear is extremely easy, to the point of it being overwhelming with the amount of stuff you quickly accumulate just from finishing Story Mode or basic Arcade Ladders. While it was addressed relatively quickly that the stat bonuses and ability modifiers attached to the gear could be turned off, I was still dreading inevitable micotransactions. Speaking of, the loot and gear system was perhaps the new feature I was most apprehensive about leading up to Injustice 2вЂ™s release. From there you can fight against other Guilds or complete event challenges in your GuildвЂ™s own personal Multiverse, earning crap loads of special loot. There are also Guilds that you can create with friends or join with strangers. For online content, the King of the Hill mode returns, along with a variant called Hot Seat in which the host of the room fights against a revolving door of opponents who spectate and take bets when they arenвЂ™t facing off against them.

Meanwhile, the AI Battle simulator allows you to basically outfit a team of computer controlled AI and send them off to fight against other AI (from the game or other players), earning EXP and loot just the same.

The Multiverse is Injustice 2вЂ™s equivalent of Mortal Kombat XвЂ™s Living Towers, a series of Arcade Ladders that have various modifiers or mutations that cycle out every few hours or days, some of which are incomprehensibly difficult to beat. Aside fromВ the basic Arcade Ladder, other single player modes include the Multiverse and AI Battle Simulator, both of which offer a breadth of weird or challenging content for those who arenвЂ™t interested in playing competitively online. Thankfully, instead of pointless quick time event mini-games breaking up the fights and cutscenes, Injustice 2 gives you the option of picking between 2 different characters for some of the fights, which along with the multiple endings gives the Story Mode a slight boost of replayability. Outside of the basic versus mode, you have a 4-6 hour long cinematic Story Mode that plays out in a similar fashion to the previous game, as you gradually cycle amongst a selection of the roster as the plot moves forward. Although the roster is big, in terms of playstyle many of them are projectile heavy, leading to some interesting but potentially frustrating matchups. The cast of playable fighters at launch is perhaps the largest in any NetherRealm game to date, sporting 28 characters from DC comics that range from returning iconic figures from the first game to more niche picks that were heavily requested by some fans. The environmental interactions and over the top stage transitions are still in, but the number of levels is smaller, and some unfortunately donвЂ™t have any second stages at all. The basic string combos and special attacks every character has by default are easy enough to learn, but as with NetherRealmвЂ™s previous games using Unreal Engine 3, itвЂ™s how you combine them into longer extended juggling combos that proves more challenging and rewarding. Just like the first game, Injustice 2 is a fighting game set on a 2D plane with simplistic mechanics that still leave goodВ room for depth, with plenty of tutorials and a practice mode in place to help new and experienced players alike. This is a big game with lots of content to address, so thereвЂ™s gonna be lots of stuff to get through. With Injustice 2, they have expanded and improved upon everything that made the first title great. Easy to learn mechanics, iconic characters and a story mode that played out like an extended interactive episode of the Justice League Animated Series all coalesced into an overall high quality gaming experience for me. While they were primarily known for the Mortal Kombat franchise, theyвЂ™ve always had a close relationship with DC comics, with the mediocre Mortal Kombat vs. IвЂ™ve been playing NetherRealm StudioвЂ™s games for years, back since when they went by Midway Games.
